State of Decay 2 launched in May final 12 months to lower than stellar critiques, principally because of the quantity of bugs, but it surely rapidly handed the million participant mark in only a week. Instead of dropping off from that prime level, the sport’s participant rely continued to rise – reaching three million gamers by July 2018, simply in time for the US’s Independence Day, and 4 million by the tip of the 12 months.
Since 2018 State of Decay 2 really continues to develop, albeit extra slowly than in its first few months – and now it’s reached a brand new milestone. According to Undead Labs’ Quin Richards, senior designer on State of Decay 2 in an interview with Polygon, the sport now boasts over 5 million gamers – and the staff remains to be “on the lookout for develop”.
As Richards explains, “we’re in a very nice place the place we’ve gotten to maintain including gamers to the sport. We’re [at] 5 million gamers, and we’re trying to develop.”
Richards attributes this regular rise in gamers to the attraction in State of Decay’s central idea – that every one participant characters are expendable and might die at any time. “Loads of zombie tales depend on their viewers valuing every particular person human being for who they’re, understanding that their loss of life is the tip of one thing irreplaceable. We need our recreation convey a minimum of a few of that feeling throughout, and that’s what numerous gamers come to it for.”
Recently the staff launched Heartland, the most recent DLC growth for State of Decay 2 – set within the location of the primary recreation, Trumbull Valley. This growth was extra story-based than earlier DLC, and even the principle recreation – which was requested by the followers. “Lots of people have been asking for targeted narrative, and that’s what Heartland was actually hoping to attain,” explains Richards.

As for the longer term, and the way Undead Labs is planning on increasing State of Decay 2 past 5 million gamers, Richards expects that future updates for the sport could provide “a mixture between Heartland and State of Decay 2, with procedural and robust narrative ties”. State of Decay three is a great distance off, in different phrases – and for the sport’s apparently huge player-base, that’s not an issue.
